I was watching on the news and it seemed they sensationalized the flooding here in Hungary a little bit. Budapest it isn’t so bad but some of the smaller towns are definitely having trouble. It appears that further south in Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria is where the severe flooding is.

They’ve closed the Rakpart here in Budapest (which are the two roads that run beside the river) and they’re probably about a metre or so underwater. The tram line that runs on the Pest side is closed as well as a few stops are underwater. Probably the same on the Buda side.

Apparently it’s the highest water level in 100 years, but it should start receding tonight. Traffic’s a mess thanks to the road closures, but that’s to be expected. The tour buses keep rolling in though, and tourists are all along the river taking snapshots. It’s funny because you can still walk right down to the edge of the water, and nobody stops you. You’d think they would want to control that a little more. Or not – this is Hungary.
